Athlete Spotlight – Mike S.

Mike S. has been a CFH member for about 2 months now. You may have encountered his energetic and positive attitude in class already. Mike has made some serious lifestyle changes over the past couple of years and joining CFH has been one of them. We chatted with Mike this week to learn a little bit more about him. His inspiring story is this week’s athlete spotlight!

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

“I started Crossfit just over 2 months ago. My first career I worked in the restaurant industry for 10 years or so. Currently, I work as a System Engineer for Doublepositive Marketing Group in Baltimore. I grew up in Timonium and lived in MD the majority of my life. My weight increased steadily in my 20’s and 30’s. At 35, I knew I needed to drastically change my lifestyle or I was not going to make it to 50.  I attended my first information session at GBMC during February of 2016. I underwent Bariatric Surgery, specifically a Sleeve Gastrectomy, on September 2, 2016 at GBMC.  My heaviest weight was 385 lbs. My surgery weight was 347 lbs. My current weight is 235 lbs. I lost the majority of the weight through clean eating and moderate exercise. My goal weight is below 200 lbs. I joined CrossFit to reach my goal weight by building lean muscle and improving my cardiovascular fitness. Crossfit is the next chapter in my fitness journey.  I’m excited to experience this journey with the CFH Community.”

What is your favorite thing about the CFH community you have encountered so far?


 “The supportive and welcoming culture at CFH is my favorite thing so far. I receive random fistbumps and tips from community members I just met.  The members of the CFH community motivate me to finish each WOD strong

What are the biggest changes you have noticed since joining CFH?


 “The biggest changes I’ve noticed since joining CFH are my core strength and my flexibility.  Coach Hugh has helped me focus on developing my core strength through front squats. He told me to focus on using proper form to squat lower then increase my weight.  Focusing on my form rather than my weight is my new mantra.  My flexibility has improved as a result of all the coaches focusing on the importance of stretching before and after the workout to improve mobility.”
